My name's Sam, I'm a full-time music producer/pianist based on the North Shore.

I started as a classical pianist when I was four years old, and gradually moved into jazz. I studied both Jazz and Classical at Victoria University in Wellington, but eventually moved into music production and session work.

As a pianist I perform regularly as a duo with Laughton Kora, from the NZ band "Kora". I've also played for Barnaby Weir (Black Seeds), Tiki Taane and Bailey Wiley. I was also lucky enough to spend two days as a session pianist and songwriter alongside Matiu Walters from Six60.

A few of my piano recordings (recorded in my home studio) were used in the 2018 season of Dancing With The Stars.

I perform regularly with a pop/jazz trio on cruise ships, and I perform a live looping set at several different bars around Auckland including the Glass Goose on Federal Street.

Having spent so much time in studios, and on stage with some of NZ's top musicians I believe there is a lot more to being a great pianist than just knowing which chords to play, or having an impressive technique.

I specialise in teaching people how you can fit into a mix, whether it's on stage or in the studio. I try to help people develop their "sound" as a pianist, and things such as which voicings will work when you're playing with a bassist and guitarist. I also have a good knowledge of gear, and how to best set yourself up to get gigs and become an in-demand keys player.
